Abstract:

To provide a superabsorbent polymer having a very high swelling capacity and excellent gel strength.

This superabsorbent polymer is based on a partly hydrolyzed homopolymer and/or copolymer of acrylonitrile which is crosslinked through the incorporation of a polyfunctional monomer, wherein 30 to 80 mol.% of the ntirile groups are converted into carboxylate groups, 20 to 70 mol.% of the nitrile groups are converted into carbonamido groups, and 0 to 20 mol.% of the nitrile groups are unchanged and the crosslinked polymer has a swelling capacity up to 700 gag in water and up to 60 g/g in physiological saline and a gel strength of 20 to 100 g.
