PURPOSE: To ensure that web smoothing effect and calendering effect are not reduced during high-temperature operation, by a method wherein a web is nipped between a metallic roll and a specified elastic roll having a sufficient surface hardness even at high temperatures.
CONSTITUTION: The surface hardness of an elastic roll at working time is so set so to satisfy the formula [where Hs(D) is Shore hardness (D); T is a working temperature (°C) of the elastic roll, 60≤T≤120] under a linear pressure of 50W 500kg/cm. As the material for the elastic roll, a non-fibrous plastic is suitably used; that is, a thermosetting resin or a thermoplastic resin having a glass transition point of above 120°C, for instance, epoxy resin, silicone resin, polyarylate resin, vinylidene fluoride resin, polyphenylene sulfide resin, phenol resin, unsaturated polyester resin, polyacetal resin, polyimide resin, or the like is used.
