To provide a reader/writer capable of excellently communicating with any of a great variety of non-contact type cards.
In this reader/writer 1 communicating with the non-contact type card 2, a RAM 7 and a ROM 8 store a plurality of parameter files (control modes) comprising a plurality of control parameters about control of the communication so as to communicate with the plurality of cards 2 having kinds different from each other. When starting the communication with the card 2, one parameter file is selected from the plurality of parameter files stored by the RAM 7 and the ROM 8, and operation trying the communication in control contents of the parameter file is sequentially performed to detect the control mode communicable with the card 2.
