Abstract:
PURPOSE:To widen a light wavelength which is usable for the optical switch and to vary the quantity of light to be switched on an analog basic by forming an ultrasonic wave diffraction grating on a piezoelectric substrate which transmits light and transferring light wave energy between two optional points in a wide area. CONSTITUTION:This optical switch has inter-digital electrodes 2 which form the optical diffraction grating on the surface and generate a surface acoustic wave, a power source 3 which supplies an electric signal to the inter-digital electrodes 2, a reflecting plate 4 which reflects light transmitted through the piezoelectric substrate 1 toward the surface where the surface acoustic wave is present, and a control means 10 which controls one of the rotary coordinates of a base 6, the frequency of the power source 3, and the distance between the reflecting plate 4 and the surface where the surface acoustic wave is present. Consequently, the optical switch is flexible in usage and varies the quantity of light to be switched on an analog basis.
