To provide a surface-coated cutting tool in which a hard coating layer shows an excellent chipping resistance in heavy cutting of a difficult-to-cut material.
The surface-coated cutting tool is configured by forming the hard coating layer on the surface of the base body of the tool, the hard coating layer which is composed of, (a) the lower layer composed of a composite nitride layer of Cr and Y, and (b) the upper layer composed of a composition tilting type vanadium oxynitride layer which has an oxygen density distribution structure in which an oxygen content rate becomes higher in the thickness direction of the layer, and wherein oxygen is not substantially contained at the lowermost surface, and nitrogen is not substantially contained at the uppermost surface.
