To provide a surface-coated cutting tool with a hard coating layer exerting excellent chipping resistance in high speed heavy cutting.
The surface-coated cutting tool has (a) a Ti compound layer as a lower layer, (b) an α type Al2O3 layer as an intermediate layer, and (c) a Y-containing α type Al2O3 layer, as an upper layer, having a crystal grain structure having a plane polygonal shape and a longitudinally long shape and containing Y, which are vapor-deposited at a surface of a tool base body. The intermediate layer and the upper layer are comprised of the α type Al2O3 layer with high (0001) plane orientation ratio and the Y-containing α type Al2O3 layer, respectively. Of the crystal grains in the upper layer, the inside of the crystal grains of ≥60% by an area ratio is divided by a crystal lattice interface comprising a constituent atom sharing lattice point form represented by at least one or more Σ3 s.
