To provide a surface coated cutting tool whose hard coating layer can show excellent chipping resistance in a high-feed intermittent cutting operation.
In the surface coated cutting tool having a lower layer composed of a Ti compound layer, and a hard coating layer composed of an upper layer composed of an Al2O3 layer on a tool body, regarding at least one TiCNO layer of the Ti compound layer, inclination angles formed by normal lines of the (001) face and the (011) face to a normal line of a vertical cross section polishing surface of the layer are measured by using a field-emission scanning electron microscope, and a case that a crossing angles between the normal lines of (001) face and between the normal lines of (011) face are 2 degrees or more is set to be a grain boundary. The TiCNO layer is composed of a modified TiCNO layer, in which a ratio of length GBL of a grain boundary, having crossing angles between the normal lines of (001) face and between the normal lines of (011) face are 15 degrees or more, to the measured layer thickness T of TiCNO layer is 320-600, in a boundary face between crystal grains identified as a grain boundary in a measuring area.
