PURPOSE: To develop an surface-coated cutting tool excellent in cutting performance and having a long service life by coating the surface of a cutting tool, etc., consisting of the sintered compact of a sintered hard alloy with a hard ceramic layer and ion-implanting a specified metal atom in the ceramic film.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of a cutting tool made of a sintered hard alloy of WC-Co, etc., is coated with a thin film of a hard ceramic such as TiC, TiN and TiCN by chemical vapor deposition, and ≥1 kind of metal atom selected from the group consisting of Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Al, Cr and Ni is ion-implanted in the coating film to form a metal atom-enriched layer on the surface of the ceramic coating layer. The blade edge of the tool is not chipped even when a metal such as stainless steel having a large cutting resistance is cut, and a durable cutting tool without any variance in the service life is obtained.
