To provide a surface-coated WC-based cemented carbide cutting tool capable of demonstrating excellent chipping resistance in the cutting of steel and cast iron.
The surface coated WC-based cemented carbide cutting tool is formed of a WC-based cemented carbide consisting of a hard phase containing at least fine particles WC of grain size of 0.1-1 μm and coarse particles WC of grain size of 3-10 μm and a binder phase mainly consisting of Co as a base material, and a hard coating layer of the average thickness of 3-20 μm is vapor-deposited on its surface. When obtaining the distribution ratio of the fine particles WC and the coarse particles WC in each section of the base material, the particle size distribution satisfies the inequalities: 0<(area occupied by fine particles WC/area occupied by coarse particles WC)<0.10 on the surface part of the base material, and the inequalities: 0.25<(area occupied by fine particles WC/area occupied by coarse particles WC)<1.0 on the inner side of the base material.
