PURPOSE: To provide a surface finishing method of a sliding member 1 which suppresses ferrite cap, are advantageous for lessening the surface roughness on a sliding surface 1a and are consequently advantageous in lessening attacking property to a mating member and seizure resistance and a device therefor.

CONSTITUTION: A roll burnishing device 5 has a supporting roller 51, a working roll 52 which is made of a sintered hard alloy and has a diameter of 3mm, an energizing roller 53 and a hydraulic cylinder 56. The sliding surface 1a (subjected to an etching treatment) of the sliding member 1 is held the supporting roller 51 and the working roll 52 by the operation of this hydraulic cylinder 56 and Hertz pressure 2.5GPa is loaded on the sliding surface 1a by the working roll 52. The sliding member 1 is rotated in this state and is subjected to a roll burnishing process. The sliding surface 1a is finished to the surface roughness as extremely small as ≤0.5μm in Rz.
