To provide a surface illumination system including a plurality of surface illuminating devices, that can individually control optical characteristics of light emitted from each surface illuminating device.
A surface illumination system comprises: a plurality of light-emitting units divided into a reference unit that is preliminarily and arbitrarily selected light-emitting unit, and a sub unit; an external control terminal; and system control means performing lighting control of the reference unit. The reference unit, and the sub unit that is a slave unit using the reference unit as a master unit, or all sub units respectively have communication means of receiving optical characteristic information transmitted by the external control terminal. Light-emission control means controls light-emission of a first sub unit and a second sub unit so that relation between the optical characteristics of light emitted from the master unit and that of light emitted from the sub unit that serves as the slave unit becomes a predetermined relation indicated by the optical characteristic information received from the external control terminal by the communication means.
