Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a surface light source device with polarizing function which can obtain a bright polarized luminous flux and is suitable for the back light source of a liquid crystal display device.
CONSTITUTION: A luminous flux parallelizing element 1 consisting of a wedgelike light scattering photoconductor having uniform scattering capability has an effective scatter irradiation parameter E (cm-1) within a range of 0.5≤E≤50, and the value of the correlative distance a (μm) when the correlation function γ(r) of refractive index uneven structure is approximated with γ (r)=exp (-r/a) (where (r) is the distance between two points in the light scattering photoconductor), is 0.06≤a≤35. Light which is made incident from a light incidence surface 2 is projected from a light guide-out surface 3 as parallelized luminous flux. A polarizing and separating plate 8 is arranged across an air layer 7, and a light projection direction correcting element 10 is arranged outside it across the air layer 9. The polarizing and separating plate 8 transmits the majority of a P-polarized component and returns the corresponding part to the luminous flux parallelizing element 1. The returned light is re-emitted from the luminous flux parallelizing element 1 after polarized light scrambling operation, and its P-polarized component is extracted again.
