To provide a surface light source device of a direct downward type suited as a light source for a large area in which, by suppressing elevation of temperatures in the surface light source device accompanied by heat generation of bar type light sources to as the smallest degrees as possible, even when numbers of bar type light sources are increased, brightness of light can be improved, saving of electric energy can be materialized, and furthermore prolongation of product life cycle can be enhanced.
The above problems are solved by means that a support part member 5 of the light source and a reflecting member 9 are provided with a heat radiating means to radiate the heat generated by the bar type light sources 2 by lighting the bar type light sources 2.
