The surface light source illumination device 1 is equipped with a plurality of light guide plates 2 to guide the outgoing light L from the light source 4, facing one side face to an outgoing face 6 crossing the side face, and extending along the incident direction of the outgoing light L; and a light guide plate array 3, in which one part of the plurality of light guide plates 2 is mutually superimposed and arranged adjacent, in a direction in parallel with the incident direction of the outgoing light L. The light guide plates 2 are equipped with extending members 12, 13 extending outward, in a direction orthogonal to the incident direction from the side face, in parallel with the incident direction of the outgoing light L. One extending member 12 is superimposed with the other extending member 13 of the light guide plate 2 adjacent, in a direction orthogonal to the incident direction of the outgoing light L.
