To provide a surface treatment method for metallic members which is capable of rapidly and easily treating the metallic members at a high yield of surface treatment materials and may be incorporated into a production line.
Functional materials 2 and 3 are shot against the surface 4a of the metallic member 1 consisting of a light alloy, such as aluminum alloy, by using a blasting treatment, by which the functional material 2 is dispersed to the surface part 4 of the metallic member 1. The functional material 3 is otherwise mixed and fixed into the metallic member of the surface part 4 and thereafter, the surface part 4 is subjected to a vacuum arc discharge treatment to discharge a vacuum arc 11 thereto, by which all of the functional materials 2 and 3 are metallurgically bonded to the metallic member 1. An equally good alternative is to allow part of the functional materials 2 and 3 fixed to the surface part 4 of the metallic member 1 to remain on the surface part 4.
