PURPOSE: To treat the surface of a sliding member for an internal-combustion engine so as to provide excellent resistance to scuffing and initial fit characteristic thereto with a safe operation by subjecting said sliding member to an alkali dipping treatment then to phosphate film treatment thereby providing a substantially necessary film on said member.
CONSTITUTION: For example, a cast iron piece which is the above-described sliding member is degreased with trichloroethylene and is then subjected to an alkali dipping treatment by a commercially marketed alkali degreasing agent and thereafter the member is rinsed. The cast iron piece after rinsing is dipped in a phosphate film treating liquid (e.g.; commercially marketed manganese phosphate treating liquid) to form a phoshate film thereon. After the cast iron piece subjected to the film formation is thoroughly rinsed, the cast iron piece is dried warm. As a result the thick phosphate film of about 10W40μm is obtd. and since the variance of the particles forming the film is relatively small, there is no unevenness in the thickness of the film. The resistance to scuffing, etc. are therefore stable over the entire part.
