To provide a simply structured, small-sized, and highly accurate surge protection device (SPD) comprising an exchange recommendation display function or the like, and a management system therefor.

An SPD 10 comprises a lightning protection element (e.g., an arrester) 12 connected by lead wires 11-1, 11-2 and a sensor section 20 between a line 1 connected to a protection object apparatus 2 and a ground line 3. When a lightning surge voltage is applied to the line 1, the arrester 12 is discharged and by discharging a lightning surge current through the lead wires 11-1, 11-2 to a side of the ground line 3, the protection object apparatus 2 is protected. The sensor section 20 includes: a condenser lens 21 which extracts an optical signal Ps by converging light Lt generated from the arrester per se when the arrester 12 is operated; and an optical connector 23 which is connected to the condenser lens 21 via an optical fiber 22. The output optical signal Ps of the optical connector 23 is sent through an optical fiber 24 to a management device 60.
