Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a controlled release pharmaceutical composition having adhesivity to biotissue and composed of a number of small-sized units ensuring the sustained release of active component and containing units coated with a bioadhesive polymer layer. CONSTITUTION: This pharmaceutical composition contains a number of microunits containing at least one active component and a means for controlling the release of the active component, e.g. a matrix, a holding, penetrating or biodecomposable release-controlling material or their combination. The microunit is coated with a bioadhesive polymer coating layer containing at least one bioadhesive polymer such as acrylic polymer or cellulosic polymer. The coating layer has a bioadhesive outer surface to impart the microunit with the adhesivity to biotissue. The composition is especially suitable for a sustained release drug having adhesivity to the mucosa, capable of keeping the release controllability independent of the bioadhesivity and administrable by oral, ocular, rectal, intraluminal, nasal or periodontal administration.
