PURPOSE: To sweeten mercaptan-containing sour hydrocarbon by bringing the above mentioned hydrocarbon into contact with a metal chelate catalyst in the presence of an oxidizing agent, ammonium hydroxide and quaternary ammonium salt.
CONSTITUTION: Sour hydrocarbon containing mercaptans is brought into contact with a catalyst composite from a metal chelate effective for oxidizing mercaptans to disulfides in the presence of an aq. soln. of an oxidizing agent, ammonium hydroxide and a quaternary ammonium compd. represented by formula (wherein R is about up to 20C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl; R1 is about 5-20C straight chain alkyl; R2 is aryl, alkaryl or alkyl and X is an OH ion, a halogen ion, a nitrate ion, etc.), to perform sweetening.
