To make a stable, quick switch to self-ignition in an engine which uses both spark ignition and self-ignition.
A combustion method of the engine is switched to self-ignition of two cycles or spark ignition of four cycles in accordance with rotation speed and required load. At the time of switching from the spark ignition to the self-ignition, processing for raising temperature of compression end is applied in order to realize stable self-ignition when temperature of exhaust is low, whereas the processing is skipped when temperature of exhaust is high. Quick switching can be realized while simultaneously starting stable self-ignition by judging whether not or processing for raising the temperature of the compression end is required on the basis of the temperature of the exhaust.
