A switching device including a plurality of position detection areas includes a continuous motion detection area for detecting a continuous motion of an detected object between the plurality of position detection areas, the continuous motion detection area being an region where the plurality of position detection areas overlap. The switching device calculates the direction of movement of the detected body in accordance with information on detection in the plurality of position detection areas and the continuous motion detection area. The switching device outputs a driving signal for directly or indirectly driving a load.
