To provide a direct dye exhibiting no drawback of a conventional direct dye.

The above direct dye is a symmetric cationic diazo compound represented by the formula (I) (wherein W1 groups are the same and express halogen atoms, or -NR4-Ph-NR5R6, -NR4-Ph-OR7, -O-Ph-OR7 or -O-Ph-NR5R6 groups, or -NR5R6 or -OR7 groups under a particular condition and L represents a non-cationic linker binding the same two azo chromophore groups).
