Abstract:

To provide a lubricating fluid produced by hydrogenating a specific component distilled out in the vacuum distillation of a specific reaction product, having excellent traction characteristics over a wide temperature range, industrially producible at a low cost and useful as a lubricating oil, a fluid for traction drive, etc.

The objective fluid is produced by alkylating (A) an alkenyl compound of the formula [R is H, a 1-4C alkyl, a (1-4C alkylsubstituted)phenyl or cyclohexyl; (m) is 0 or 1; n≥2; the double bond has a structure added in the form of a linear or branched chain] (e.g. a mixture of o-tolylnonadiene and o-tolyltridecatriene) with (B) an aromatic hydrocarbon or an olefin [e.g. benzene, toluene, (methyl)styrene or vinylcyclohexane] in the presence of (C) an acidic catalyst, distilling the reaction product under a pressure of 1mmHg and hydrogenating the ≤36C fraction distilled at a temperature range of 80-240°C. The fluid has a kinetic viscosity of 1-500cSt at 40°C.
