PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a remedy for neuropathy, in high efficiency, by hydrogenating 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-polyhydroxyalkylpteridine in the presence of a catalyst, removing the catalyst and inorganic salt from the reaction mixture, and adding an alkanol and concentrated hydrochloric acid.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula II can be produced by (1) hydrogenating 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-polyhydroxyalkylpteridine of formula I (A is 2W5C polyhydroxyalkyl) in the presence of dihydrogen alkali metal phosphate and a hydrogenation catalyst, (2) removing the hydrogenation catalyst by filtration after the addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid to the reaction mixture, (3) concentrating the filtrate under reduced pressure to remove water, (4) adding an alkanol to the residue, and removing the precipitated inorganic salt by filtration, (5) concentrating the filtrate, and (6) adding an alkanol and concentrated hydrochloric acid to the filtrate.
