Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a phenolic compound which may have various substituent groups, form an aryl Grignard reagent using a specific tri-n-alkyl borate, economically on an industrial scale with easy reaction operation.

CONSTITUTION: The Grignard reagent of formula I [R is H, halogen, alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkoxy-lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, mono W tri(lower alkyl) silyl, or mono W tri(lower alkylsilyl)-lower alkyl m is integer of 1W5; X is halogen] is made to react with the compound of formula B(OR')3 (R' is 3W6C straight-chain alkyl) preferably at 30W60°C. It is not necessary to add a solvent other than the ether solvent used in the preparation of the Grignard reagent. The reaction product is hydrolyzed, and the resultant compound of formula II (n is 1 or 2) is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide to obtain the objective compound of formula III economically in high yield and purity.
