Abstract:

To simply obtain the subject compound useful as a coupling agent, etc., in an industrial scale at a low cost by adding ammonia to a reaction mixture without preliminarily isolating an obtained intermediate.

This process for the synthesis of a disubstituted carbodiimide includes a first stage of phosgenation of an N,N'-disubstituted urea of the formula (R1 and R2 are each phenyl, a 1-8C alkyl or a 5-6C cycloalkyl) (preferably N,N'-dicyclohexylurea) in an organic solvent medium (preferably a dialkyl ether). Therein, after this first stage, ammonia is added to the reaction mixture preferably at -5 to 10°C without preliminary isolation of any intermediate compound. The first stage preferably comprises a first operation comprising filtering the reaction mixture or extracting the reaction mixture with water after the addition of the ammonia to isolate the produced carbodiimide, evaporating the organic solvent and introducing phosgene into an organic solvent suspension or solution of the urea compound to carry out the phosgenation, and a second operation for degassing the reaction mixture using an inert gas or at reduced pressure.
