PURPOSE: To simply prepare a solution compound in a high yield without requiring any complicated purification operation by reacting an alkylthiophenol derivative with a dialkyl sulfate.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R is allyloxy, 9-fluorenylmethoxy or 2,2,2-trichloroethoxy; R1 is lower alkyl; X is H, halogen or lower alkyl) is reacted with a compound of formula: (R2)2SO4 (R2 is lower alkyl) in a solvent (e.g. acetonitrile) in the absence of a solvent at 0-150°C to provide the objective of formula II. The dialkyl sulfate is used in an amount of 5-15 times mole based on the compound of formula I and the solvent is also used in an amount of 0.1-10l per mole of the compound of formula I. The sulfonium compound exhibits an alkoxycarbonyl group-forming action in aqueous solution, thereby useful as a reagent for introducing the alkoxycarbonyl group as a protection group in an organic synthetic chemistry field such as a peptide synthesis.
