To provide a method for measuring settlements by stratum with less workload and a low cost.

Simple settling bars 1, which are rods 11 with a screw 12 disposed on one end thereof, are prepared corresponding to the number of strata whose settlements are to be measured. The simple settling bars 1 are inserted into the ground so that the screws 12 at the lower ends respectively reach the positions of strata in the same way as the Swedish weight sounding method. The positions of measurement prisms 16 which project aboveground and are mounted to the upper ends of the simple settling bars 1 are measured with a measuring device 5 of a total station and so on. Then the settlements by stratum are calculated using a PC3. The conditions of the strata are examined by a ground survey before the simple settling bars 1 are inserted.
