To synchronize a crank angle and an engine control parameter simultaneously with start or restart of an engine.
This system and method of controlling the stop of the operation of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine includes a mechanical energy storing device for decelerating a crank shaft to a desired stop position in restarting the engine. The energy stored during the stop of operation can be used for stopping or relocating the crank shaft to one of a plurality of crank angle positions effective for restarting, and/or used for rotating the crank shaft during restarting the engine. A fly wheel composed of two or more parts and having a variable mass fixedly or selectively connected with one or more springs can be used for selectively storing and releasing energy.
