Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for storing energy in compressed gas and retrieving energy from the compressed gas.SOLUTION: The system comprises: a hydraulic pump which pumps hydraulic fluid between a first pump port 14 and a second pump port 16 in response to force applied by a generator/motor and also can impart force to the generator/motor in response to the hydraulic fluid; a first compression/expansion vessel 20; a second compression/expansion vessel 30 for exchanging the hydraulic fluid with the hydraulic pump via the second pump port; a gas storage subsystem 100 for selectively storing gas in, or releasing gas from, the first gas compression/expansion vessel and the second gas compression/expansion vessel; and a control subsystem for controlling a plurality of gas valves to switch between the storing and the releasing. In response to the hydraulic fluid pumped between the first and second pump ports, gas is compressed and stored; and, in response to the pressure, the hydraulic fluid flows between the first and second pump ports thereby to release energy.
