PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a robust system which communicates information between interconnected electronic devices by receiving and storing initial copyright information from a 1st source, receiving updated copyright information from a 2nd source, and updating the stored copyright information in response.
SOLUTION: A DSS unit 170 inspects a received event data value to decide whether or not a password is needed for a program choice. When password authentication is requested, the DSS 170 returns authentication error/negation representation to a VCR 100. The VCR 100 generates an OSD for requesting a DSS password. The DSS password is used to construct a message which has already been authenticated. The VCR 100 sends an authenticated data packet to the DSS 170. The DSS 170 collates whether a requested program and the password level match with each other. When they match each other, the DSS 170 returns a completion taken.
