Abstract:
To provide a system for monitoring a wear state of a carbon brush in an improved electrical machine.SOLUTION: A system comprises: a carbon brush including an upper surface, a lower surface opposite the upper surface, a length from the upper surface to the lower surface, and a first cavity extending into the carbon brush from the upper surface; one or more lead wires extending from the carbon brush at an insertion point on the upper surface; a spring having a first end, a second end, and a coiled portion positioned above the upper surface of the carbon brush; a spacer positioned between the coiled portion of the spring and the upper surface of the carbon brush; and a wear state monitor including a sensor. The sensor is configured to measure a length diminished from an initial length of the carbon brush as the lower surface of the carbon brush wears away during use.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
