PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for purifying exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine which can reduce generation of NOby an oxidation catalyst mounted on an exhaust gas post-processing device on an exhaust passage and emission of the NOinto the atmosphere when a vehicle is in an idling operation state after traveling.SOLUTION: An exhaust gas post-processing device 31 having an oxidation catalyst 31a and a DPF 31b in this order from an upstream side is installed on an exhaust passage 15 of an internal combustion engine 10. When a catalyst index temperature T indicating a temperature of the oxidation catalyst 31a is in a set temperature range Rab between a predetermined lower limit setting temperature Ta and a predetermined upper limit setting temperature Tb and an estimated PM accumulation amount V of the DPF 31b is less than a predetermined regeneration start threshold Vc after an operation state of the internal combustion engine is shifted from a traveling operation state to an idling operation state, EGR control is performed with a target value Et of an EGR rate E in EGR control set at a second EGR rate E2 which is higher than a first EGR rate E1 during normal operation of the internal combustion engine 10.
