PURPOSE: To automatically clean the tape measure itself every time it is wound in and out its container by providing a cleaning device consisting of a contact medium of soft material holding the front and rear faces of the tape, at an entrance/exit of the tape measure.

CONSTITUTION: At an entrance/exit of the tape measure 2 of a tape measure container, a device 3 for cleaning the tape 2 is provided. The cleaning device 3 is so constituted as to hold the front and rear faces of the tape 2 by contact bodies 4. Both surfaces of the tape 2 are kept in touch with the contact body 4 at all times. The contact bodies 4 are formed of soft material, for example, sponge or the like is a little resistance when the tape is taken in and out and not damaging the tape 2. The using method of the tape measure is not different from conventional ones, the tape 2 can be automatically cleaned every time it is taken in and out.
