To increase the strength of a tappet simple substance and to improve the wear resistance of the sliding face therein with a cam or the like by incorporating specified amounts of ceramics particles, whiskers, fibers or their mixture into a matrix of an aluminum alloy.
To the powder of an aluminum alloy as a matrix, ceramics particles, whiskers, fibers or their mixture is added by 3 to 25 vol.%, and they are mixed. The raw material power 5 after the mixing is filled into a compacting chamber 8 between a core 6 and a die 7, which is forcedly pressed by a punch 9 to form a green compact 10 having the shape approximately same as that of a tappet. Then, the green compact 10 released from the die 7 is charged to a sintering furnace while feeding a protective atmospheric gas and is sintered for a certain time at a prescribed temp. near the m.p. of the aluminum alloy. In this way, the tappet contg. the ceramics particles in the matrix can be obtd. Next, hot forging, T6 heat treatment, finish working to the surface or the like are executed according to necessity.
