Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a target identification method and a target identification device that can appreciably reduce the computational complexity of a correlation value of a local region and quickly and stably identify a target when recognizing a target from an input multilevel image.
SOLUTION: The number of pixels of a target is counted within a local region of a labeling image obtained from an input image to be identified. The necessity of correlation value computation for the local region is determined from the count and a given threshold. Related local regions in a target region and related local regions in template images both corresponding to the local region are extracted, and correlation values are computed. The correlation values of all the local regions for which correlation value computation is found necessary are summed up. The best matching result is determined from the sum total of correlation values computed within a moving range of the template images. A target present in the template image with the best matching result of all the template images is presumed to be the target present in the image to be identified, and the name of the target is outputted.
