PURPOSE: To project video on an entire screen by automatically adjusting video sources except the one whose aspect ratio is 16:9 in a size for which character information does not disappear and to reduce video distortion.

CONSTITUTION: This receiver is constituted of a character position detection means 30 for detecting the positions of characters inserted to inputted video signals and outputting the detected result, an aspect ratio detection means for detecting the aspect ratios of the video signals, a controller 40 for judging the optimum aspect ratio based on the detected results of the character position detection means 30 and the aspect ratio detection means and outputting control signals corresponding to the judged result, an aspect ratio conversion means 20 for switching to the aspect ratio designated by the control signals and a display device 10 provided with the screen whose aspect ratio is 16:9 for projecting signals whose aspect ratios are converted.
