A communication system includes a plurality of terminals, one of which is operated as the control station while other terminals than the terminal operated as the controlled station are operated as controlled stations. Each terminal for use in the communication system includes a control frame detection unit for detecting control frames received from the other terminals. Each control frame includes a first terminal identifier stored in a frame header and a second terminal identifier stored in a data part subsequent to the frame header. If the first terminal identifier is different from the second terminal identifier, it is decided that a terminal indicated by the first terminal identifier is not operated as a controlled station, whereas if the first terminal identifier is identical to the second terminal identifier, it is decided that a terminal indicated by the first terminal identifier is operated as a control station.
