PURPOSE: To obtain terpolymers as additives for improving the flowability of mineral oils and mineral oil distillates by polymerizing ethylene, vinyl acetate and vinyl ester of a specific acid.
CONSTITUTION: In a method for producing a terpolymer containing 5-35 wt.% vinyl acetate unit and 1-25 wt.% vinyl neononanate unit or vinyl neodecanoate unit other than an ethylene unit and having an average mol.wt. Mn of 500-5,000 g. mol-1, the monomer mixture is polymerized under a pressure of 50-700 MPa at 100-350°C in the presence of an initiator and, according to circumstances, under the addition of a mol.wt. adjusting agent. The above terpolymer can excellently improve the flowability of mineral oil and mineral oil distillates of a kind on which sufficient effect can not be exerted in flow behavior by additives of conventional technique.
