To provide a thermal recording material which is high in coloring density, has characteristics such as reduced ground fogging, and is especially excellent in adhesion to adhesive paper such as a revenue stamp.
In the thermal recording material having a thermal coloring layer containing an electron donating colorless dye and an electron accepting compound on a support, the electron accepting compound contains a compound expressed by the formula (1): R1-Ph-SO2R2 (wherein, R1 is a hydroxyl group or an alkyl group; R2 is -NH-Ph, -Ph-OR3, or -NH-CO-NH=Ph; R3 is an alkyl group; Ph is an unsubstituted phenyl or phenylene group), the average roughness Ra75 of the center line of a thermal recording surface is 2.0 μm or below, and the thermal coloring layer contains diacetone-modified polyvinyl alcohol in an amount of 8-20 mass% of the total solid content of the thermal coloring layer and a dihydrazide compound and/or a polyvalent metal salt as a crosslinking agent.
