Abstract:
To solve the problem in which lithium and lithium ion batteries are vulnerable to thermal runaway, during which heat and gas are rapidly released from a battery, creating a fire hazard.SOLUTION: A battery is housed in a battery chamber having an air passage to a tray. The tray is filled with flame retardant powder and closed with a lid having a plurality of holes. In the case of thermal runaway of the battery, a resulting increased pressure causes the flame retardant powder to be discharged from the tray to form a cloud of the flame retardant powder at the outside of a housing.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A
