PURPOSE: To obtain a dye having excellent spectral characteristics in order to obtain high image quality by adding a specific dye in a colorant layer.
CONSTITUTION: At least one kind of dyes represented by general formulae I - III (wherein R1 is a group wherein a value of a Hammett substituent constant σp is 0.2 or more, Ar is an arylene group and R2 - R5 are a substituent) is contained in a colorant layer. By this method, a thermal transfer material having a hue pref. from the aspect of color reproduction, easy to sublime, not thermally decomposed under the operating condition of a thermal head, having a high molecular absorbancy, stable against light, humidity and various chemicals, easy to synthesize, excellent in ink aptitude and imparting high image quality can be obtained.
