Abstract:

To eliminate the necessity of treatment for the back of a base in the coating process for a ribbon using polyethylene terephthalate by applying the back coating on the surface of a base on the opposite side of a thermal transfer layer by the ribbon itself.

A base 22(122) composed of preferably polyethylene terephthalate and a functional layer 24(124) composed of wax, a pigment, bonded resin and in some cases, a residual solvent and polymeric silicone resin suitable for the back coating are preferably contained in a thermal transfer ribbon 20(120). The back coating 125 is formed on a one treated surface of the base 22 by bringing the one treated surface of the base 22 into contact with another ribbon or the central layer 24 of another section of another ribbon for at least 24 hours. For the purpose of using the thermal transfer ribbon 20(120) effectively, the functional layer 24 is pressed on the ribbon itself by the rotation and brought into contact with the untreated surface of the base 22.
