Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the cutoff wavelength of a completed optical fiber by controlling heating conditions of a heating means so as to suppress the loss in weight after heating from that before heating when working a quartz glass- based optical fiber preform while heating the optical fiber preform with the heating means.
SOLUTION: Thermal working of a quartz glass-based optical fiber preform is carried out by controlling heating conditions of a heating means so as to suppress the loss in weight after heating from that before heating, preferably the loss in weight within 3% when working the optical fiber preform while heating the optical fiber preform in the vicinity of the softening temperature thereof. An oxyhydrogen flame burner is suitable among a burner, an electric resistance furnace, a high-frequency electric furnace, etc. The heating conditions are preferably controlled so as to provide 2,000-2,250°C surface temperature of the quartz glass-based optical fiber preform and the oxyhydrogen flame burner is preferably used as the heating means. The linear velocities of oxygen and hydrogen fed from the burner are preferably adjusted according to the outside diameter of the optical fiber preform. Thereby, the heating conditions can be controlled.
