PURPOSE: To obtain a thermoformable compound which can give various flexible articles at ambient temperature by treating a amyliferous component and a hydroxycarboxylic acid salt under conditions in which the amyliferous component can partially melt.
CONSTITUTION: There is provided a compound which is prepared by mixing an amyliferous component (A), desirably starch etherified with ionic (especially cationic) or nonionic group, a hydroxycarboxylic acid salt (B) (desirably sodium lactate or potassium lactate) in such an amount as to give a weight ratio of 99/1 to 25/75, desirably 98/2 to 60/4 and optionally at least one additive (C) (e.g. extender or filler, plasticizer or antioxidant) and subjecting the mixture to a treatment in which component A can exist in a partially molten state, for example, curing/extrusion at 130°C or below, desirably in the range of 50-120°C under conditions in which component A is not depolymerized in the presence of components B and/or C and in which component A is present in a partially molten state.
