PURPOSE: To provide the subject composition which is composed of a polyphenylene ether, a polyamide and an aromatic-nitro derivative, and is excellent in mechanical, physical and thermal properties and chemical resistance as well as good machinability.

CONSTITUTION: This composition is composed of (A) 5-95 wt.% of a polyphenylene ether resin, (B) 95-5 wt.% of a polyamide, (C) an amount more than 0.01 pts. (preferably, 0.1-2 pts.), per 100 pts.wt. of A and B, of a derivative of the formula [AR is phenylene or aromatic group composed of 2 or 3 fused rings; X is O or NR1 (R1 is H, 1-10C alkyl or the like)] (e.g. 4-nitro-phthalic anhydride or the like) and an acid neutralization agent, preferably, a basic carbonate of Mg6Al2(OH)16(O3.4H2O), a polymer modifier, a reinforcing agent, a flame retardant, a dyestuff, a pigment, a stabilizer and/or a lubricant.
