PURPOSE: To obtain a thin film magnetic head having high electromagnetic conversion efficiency and high recording density characteristic by providing plural grooves to a return pass part and making the direction thereof approximately perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic flux passing in the return pass part.
CONSTITUTION: A main magnetic pole 6 consisting of a thin Co90Zr10 film is formed via an insulating layer on a substrate 1 by using an integrated thin film technique. A 4-turn coil 4 consisting of Cu or Al is formed via an insulating layer on such main magnetic pole 6, by which an induction type element 5 is constituted. The return pass part 3 is further formed of the same thin Co90Zr10 film as the thin film of the pole 6. The rugged grooves 11 are formed to the return pass part 3 so as to intersect approximately orthogonally with the direction of the magnetic flux 8. The rugged grooves are likewise formed near the terminal end of the part 3 in the direction parallel with a floating surface 2. The rugged grooves 11 are radially formed between the main magnetic pole 6 and the part A-A' and between the part A-A' and the terminal part, by which the twin-body type head having the induction type element is manufactured.
