PURPOSE: To provide a thin strip end detecting device and a detecting method capable of accurately detecting the start tongue and end tail of a thin strip coil in a simplified constitution.

CONSTITUTION: A holder 3 is provided for securing a coil 2 comprising thin strip 2a coiled on a flat table 1. The holder 3 is arranged connected to the rotary shaft of a motor so as to be rotatable due to the running of the motor. An arm 4 is installed in the end part of the table 1. The arm 4 is constituted by rotatably connecting a plurality of leg sections 4a of the arm 4, and movably providing the tip of the arm 4 in multiple directions using the motor as a driving source. A vibration sensor 5 is provided at the tip of the arm 4. The vibration sensor 5 is constituted by a thin bar-like contact member 5a whose tip is sharply machined and a head part 5b that converts the vibration of the contact member 5a into electric signals. The head part 5b is connected to a detection circuit through a connection cord.
