To obtain a new compound capable of giving a liquid crystal composition good in switching characteristics and having excellent properties including quick responsiveness, diminished temperature dependency of optical speed of response and high contrast.
This new thiophene compound is a compound of the formula R1-A1-A2-B1-A3-B2-A4-R2 [R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl; A1 and, A2 are each a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl, or the like; A3 and A4 are each a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, or the like; B1 and B2 are each a single bond, COO, OOC, or the like], e.g. 6-[4-(5-octylthiophen-2-yl) benzenecarbonyloxy]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-naphthalenecarboxylic acid (R)-1,1,1- trifluoro-2-hexyl ester of formula I. The aimed compound is obtained, in the case of the compound of formula I, by reducing and then esterifying a compound of formula II to form a compound of formula III which is then reacted with benzyl bromide, or the like.
