NEW MATERIAL:Threo-2,3-dihydroxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-propionic acid of formula I.
USE: It is used as a synthetic intermediate of d-3-acetoxy-cis-2,3- dihydro-5-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1, 5-benzazepin-4(5H)-one hydrochloride which is used as a remedy for stenocardia or essential hyperten sion.
PREPARATION: A trans-4-methoxycinnamic acid of formula III is oxidized to give the compound of formula I. Preferably, the starting substance is brought into contact with an oxidizing agent or an oxidation auxiliary in a solvent such as benzene or pyridine. The oxidizing agent is, e.g., osmium tetroxide, and it is combined with an oxidation auxiliary such as a tertiary amine N-oxide to effect the oxidation at about -80°CWabout +60°C.
